THE CHILDREN'S SOCIETY

The Children's Society has been awarded funding to develop the Young Carers Initiative. The Initiative Team provides information and support to professionals working with young carers, including good practice guidelines and on a higher level to promote policy. Their website provides information directly to young carers.

Medway Young Carers Project

Our aim is to support young carers and their families to ensure they have the same opportunities as other families.

Who are Young Carers?

Young carers are children and teenagers who help to look after an ill or disabled family member. It could be a physical disability, mental illness, Hiv/Aids related illness, drug or alcohol misuse in the family, that has an effect on their lives.

What does the project do for Young Carers?

Young Carers are also very COOL! (9KB)

	Provide respite in the forms of outings and activities.
	1:1 Key-worker support.
	Support young carers and their families by accessing services appropriate to them.
	Advocacy with other agencies and within families.
	The opportunity to meet other young carers.
	After school clubs
	Young Carers Forum

The Young Carers School Project (37KB)

Introduction:

This project was introduced in 2004 with the specific aim of working with all secondary schools and colleges within the Medway Towns in order to assist them with the identification and support of young carers.

It began life as part of the "Medway Young Carers Project" but assumed its own identity in 2005. Although separate the project continues to work closely with colleagues based at the carers centre of young carers.

Project Activities

Providing assemblies to highlight young carers problems and the support that is available

Addressing meetings of Education Professionals

Training of support staff in the identification and support for young carers

P.H.S.E. - lessons to look in more depth at the effects of caring on young carers lives

Fund raising activities

Networking to raise awareness of young carer issues

One to one support of young carers in school
