It is important that
everybody takes a break from the demands of caring, whether it be for
the odd hour in a day, the odd day each week or month, or maybe even for
a holiday. Being a family carer also means that you need to care for
yourself, taking time out and giving yourself the opportunity to relax,
meet friends, or perhaps tackle some jobs, that you cannot normally do.
A break also makes it possible
for you to carry on caring; otherwise ill health or exhaustion may mean
that in time you simply will not be able to continue. There can also be
real benefits for the person you are caring for, such as social contact,
new friends and new interests and activities. There
are also breaks available for those who wish to go as a couple or family
with the cared for person. We realise that there are some people
wishing to do this. The following
information will hopefully provide you with some ideas on how to get a
break, and also where to go to get help. Your social services
department may be able to help you, however, the demand on these
services is high and you may not be able to get help immediately. |

These are run by local
authorities and voluntary organisations, providing an opportunity for
adults to meet and take part in organised activities such as craftwork,
games etc. Meals and transport are usually provided, and attendance at
such a Centre by the cared for, gives the Carer some time to
themselves. Centres in the Medway area include The Walter Brice Centre,

health problem. The centre is open from 9am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.
Transport is available to those who live in the Strood area, which
includes the Hoo Peninsula, Halling and Cuxton.
Clients can enjoy
breakfast on arrival and, later on, a hot lunch. Many clients attend
from outside this area with their families providing transport. It also
provides support and signposting to services for families and carers.
At the centre, clients
can enjoy a wide range of activities supported by a high staff to client
ratio, with all medication and incontinence issues dealt with by trained
staff. A hairdresser attends the centre on a regular basis for both
ladies and gentlemen.

Carers FIRST’s
Aiming High
short break service, delivered through Medway carers centre, aims to
offer disabled children and young people (age range: from 5 to 19 years)
access to social and leisure opportunities similar to those of their
non-disabled peers. The breaks give young people time away from their
family carers and at the same time give carers an often much needed
break from their caring role. A short break may include supported time
during the day or evening, weekends or overnight stays. It could take
place in the community or at home.
There is an eligibility criteria that the children or young person must
meet before accessing the service .Subject to meeting eligibility
criteria, a Carers FIRST staff member visits the home to discuss with
the family the disabled child’s needs and agree what they might like to
do during their supported break. Examples of things they might choose
are visits to and play in the park, activity days out, swimming,
supported access to community groups such as youth clubs or performing
arts clubs or creative play at home.
We have a dedicated team of trained community care workers and
volunteers who work with the children and young people. Staff skills are
matched with childrens needs to provide a quality assured service.
The service is flexible and is delivered at hours to meet the needs of
the family. Office contact hours are listed as below:
